The ACCCC, founded in 1953, has a unique history in fighting cancer. The Center has pioneered all aspects of cancer treatment, education, and research in Brazil. The Institution was the first dedicated to treatment of patients with cancer (1953), to have a residency program in Oncology (1953), to establish a Pediatric Oncology Department (1964); to perform the first breast conserving surgery in Brazil; to partner with an International Basic Research Institute – The Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research (1983 – 2010); to structure a Biobank certified by the National Research Ethics Committee (1997); and to implement a graduate program in Oncology in a private Institution recognized by the Ministry of Education. During all these years, the Institution has been providing prevention, diagnosis, treatment, education, and research (basic, translational, and clinical). Taken together, these activities show the pioneering role ACCCC has filled as a Cancer Center. Indeed, in 2011 the Institution changed its name from Hospital do Cancer A.C.Camargo to A.C.Camargo Cancer Center.

The Oswaldo Cruz German Hospital model of care summarises the efficiency and hospitality that mark the Hospital’s vocation to care for people’s health. The balance between tradition and modernity is the hallmark of the Care Team, which has always occupied a prominent position since its foundation in 1897.
Decisions on patient care are based on the best scientific evidence and take into account the patient’s life history and needs. Self-care education is also one of the fundamental premises of the hospital’s model of care.
Committed to the well-being of its patients, the Hospital Alemão Oswaldo Cruz Care Model seeks to establish good relations between patients, relatives, physicians and employees.
The Care Team at Hospital Alemão Oswaldo Cruz is considered one of the best in the country and stands out in Latin America for offering individualised, comprehensive and humanised care, always focusing on the patient and the family.
We generate and disseminate knowledge through investments to promote innovation, research and education. We train talent and support the development of professionals through technical, undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

The Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre (HCPA) is a public university institution academically linked to the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) and is part of the network of university hospitals of the Brazilian Ministry of Education. Its history dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, when the idea of creating a teaching hospital was born. After decades of planning, technical obstacles and redefinitions of the project, the hospital was formally constituted in 1970 and started its activities in 1972. Since then, it has developed an outstanding trajectory in medical care, professional training and research, consolidating itself as a national reference centre.
Since its foundation, the HCPA has offered specialised and highly complex care, mainly through the Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS), although it also attends patients with private insurance. In partnership with UFRGS, it plays a key role in the training of undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as in the production of knowledge and technological innovation in health. Its commitment to social responsibility is reflected in educational, environmental and citizenship promotion actions, strengthening its role as a public institution of excellence.
Moreover, thanks to its efficient management model, the HCPA was the inspiration for the creation of the Brazilian Hospital Services Company (Ebserh), which coordinates the country’s university hospitals. Its hospital management system AGH, created in the 1980s, gave rise to the AGHU Project, adopted nationally to improve hospital administration. This set of initiatives consolidates the HCPA as an example of innovation, quality care and commitment to public health in Brazil.

In the mid-19th century, cholera was spreading throughout Brazil and killing more than 100 people a day. The doctor José D’Almeida Soares Lima Bastos, then president of the Portuguese Reading Cabinet, brought together members of the Portuguese colony and founded the first Charity Hospital in Pernambuco, which initially functioned as a resistance centre to treat the victims of the epidemic. In 1855, the Provisional Portuguese Charity Hospital came into operation. The 16th of September was chosen for the solemnity of the Hospital’s installation, a date of great gala for Portugal, which celebrated the accession to the throne of Pedro V, son of the Brazilian Maria II.
The Provisional Portuguese Charity Hospital, located in the Boa Vista neighbourhood, was inaugurated on 18 November 1855. The institution cared for 62 cholera patients in the first few months of 1856, and the hospital’s management received thanks from the President of the Province of Pernambuco, José Bento da Cunha, for the services provided to the capital’s indigent population, without distinction of colour or nationality.
By decree dated 2nd July 1856, with the aim of expressing the support of the Portuguese nation for the institution, the King of Portugal placed the Recife Hospital under his Royal Protection, an honour that was confirmed in 1862. Subsequently, a charter of 7th November 1907, granted by King Carlos I, conferred the title of REAL on the Portuguese Charity Hospital in Pernambuco, today the largest hospital complex in the North-Northeast.
