Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center opened in 1992 to provide comprehensive cancer services to the South Florida community. Along with the 40-bed inpatient hospital, UMHC – University of Miami Hospital & Clinics, Sylvester is the cancer diagnostic, treatment and research centre for UHealth, University of Miami Health System.
Sylvester in Miami offers outpatient clinics, a 40-bed inpatient unit, an intensive care unit, a radiation oncology suite, the Mohs Surgery Center/Dermatology Clinic, the Rosenfield Gastroenterology Center, a stem cell transplant clinic, a cardiology clinic and laboratory, a radiology/imaging suite, an interventional radiology clinic, the Spine Institute clinics, an on-site laboratory and pharmacy, the Courtelis Center for Psychosocial Oncology, the Jill Selevan Chapel and a cafeteria, as well as administrative offices. Sylvester in Miami also has a paediatric oncology clinic, Alex’s Place.
Sylvester organises its cancer research and treatment into 15 “site disease groups”, specialised multidisciplinary teams of medical professionals who focus on specific types of cancer. From high-frequency lung and breast cancer to less common cancers such as paediatric and thyroid cancers, Sylvester’s site disease groups are made up of a wide range of specialists, including medical oncologists, surgeons and radiation oncologists.
