The Guatemalan Social Security Institute (IGSS) was created on 30 October 1946 by Decree 295, as an autonomous institution under public law with its own legal personality and full capacity to acquire rights and contract obligations. Its origins date back to the democratic process initiated in 1944 and the study carried out by international experts on the social and economic conditions of the country, which resulted in the book Bases de la Seguridad Social en Guatemala (Bases of Social Security in Guatemala). Since then, the IGSS has aimed to implement a national, unitary and compulsory social security system for the benefit of the entire population, in accordance with the principle of minimum protection. Article 100 of the 1985 Constitution reaffirms the right to social security as a guarantee for the inhabitants of the nation.
