The Luis Guillermo Ibarra Ibarra National Rehabilitation Institute has its origins in 1951 with the creation of the General Directorate of Rehabilitation of the Ministry of Health and Assistance, composed of various centres specialised in rehabilitation for different disabilities. Over the decades, different institutes were transformed and unified, such as the Rehabilitation Medicine Institute, the Orthopaedic Institute and the Human Communication Institute, culminating in 1997 with the creation of the National Rehabilitation Centre (CNR), which in 2005 was consolidated as the National Rehabilitation Institute (INR).

Today, the INR is a highly specialised institution recognised nationally and internationally for its leadership in orthopaedics, rehabilitation medicine, audiology and otorhinolaryngology. It actively participates in international cooperation programmes, develops extramural campaigns and maintains quality standards certified by the Consejo de Salubridad General and ISO 9001. Since 2015, it has been named after Luis Guillermo Ibarra Ibarra in honour of his outstanding legacy.

It is a health institution dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of disability through scientific research, training of human resources and specialised medical care of excellence with a humanistic approach.

The Hospital Juárez de México, founded on 23 August 1847, has more than 170 years of history providing medical care to the population. It was born as a Blood Hospital during the American invasion and over time it consolidated as a national reference institution, recognised as the “cradle of surgery in Mexico”. Throughout the 19th century, it expanded its capacity, became a teaching hospital and made important medical advances, such as the first blood transfusion and the first Mexican X-ray. In honour of President Benito Juárez, it adopted its current name in 1872.
During the 20th century, the hospital was strengthened with new areas, services and technology, including the creation of the country’s first Blood Bank (1942) and Bone Bank (1945). After the 1985 earthquake, which destroyed its facilities, it was rebuilt and reopened in 1989 in the north of Mexico City. More recently, it faced damage from the 2017 earthquake and the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, during which it was a designated hospital for the care of SARS-CoV-2 patients. Currently, the Hospital Juárez de México continues its modernisation process and maintains its commitment to medical care, teaching and research at the service of the population.
