The Central Hospital of the Instituto de Previsión Social (IPS), located in the Santo Domingo neighbourhood of Asunción, Paraguay, was inaugurated on 20 November 1969 and is a fundamental pillar of the country’s public health system. With 55 years of history, it attends an average of 3,800 daily outpatient consultations and more than 1,439 inpatients annually. It is the largest maternity centre in the country, with around 8,000 births per year, and performs thousands of diagnostic studies, transfusions and haemodialysis sessions per month. It has also made progress in bone marrow, kidney and corneal transplants, and in specialised treatments such as intrauterine surgery and neurointerventional procedures.
The hospital employs more than 1,967 professionals in 51 medical specialties and continues to expand its infrastructure with new outpatient centres, comprehensive specialties and future projects such as a haemato-oncology centre and an outpatient haemodialysis centre. It is the main point of care for IPS insured persons in Paraguay, offering highly complex services and contributing significantly to national public health.
